“Emma, the accordion plays badges for you at sunset…”

Emma, the accordion plays badges for you at sunset
Girl Scout patches of first fire made, best pressed linens & most unable to cry
As those crocodile tears mixed with high balls & beers, coasters make silence unachievable
And facades of flirtation untenable & the smallest battles are winnable with an oh-so-clever comeback
Strong drink, clear fire burning on [...]

“I asked her, ‘Who will get the bullet & who will get the blank?’…”

I asked her, “Who will get the bullet & who will get the blank?”
And staring into those green eyes like the glass surface of an isolated lake
Waiting for the tears to squeeze their way out of her inlets & dive down her face
I thought of the sleepless, dreamless nights I’ve been having
The hum of the [...]

“I was falling in Reno, falling over, falling down & falling into…”

I was falling in Reno, falling over, falling down & falling into
A neon Dramamine of gradual death, in the throes of businessmen speak
With their twisted tongues torn out & transformed into YES speak doublespeak
Finely pressed Brooks Brothers shirts hiding their now never pulsing hearts, forgotten heartbeats
Pants with stretch waists, measured in small, medium, large with [...]

“Nightime wasn’t the way it was supposed to go down…”

Nightime wasn’t the way it was supposed to go down
In a town on the edge of the bay, daytime boats
You talking through tears about something that face did
And the way when he put his hand on your shoulder to say, “I’m sorry”
It made your skin crawl across the floor & disappear into the corner
Another glass [...]

“Nearly impossible to unbuild something…”

Nearly impossible to unbuild something
Use the flathead screwdriver or lose it
Hold the bolt still, pry loose the thread
Match the wrench & then split the wood
It all ends up unsorted pieces
We end up not seeing the parts into anything
Build a boat or build a bruise
Get scars ferociously, seethe
Give up on glue & pre-fab parts &
Leave orphans [...]

“Cigarette mouth tastes like trash & burn…”

Cigarette mouth tastes like trash & burn
She always knew how to kiss me wrong
Too tight t-shirt & bobbed hair
Fumbling in the moonlight for that tremendous bra strap
Held in thunder, her “best asset”
Breaking the wood & bleeding out
The sound used to runaway & hide
I’d put on Sinatra as you lay your jangly purse
By the endtable not [...]
