“I fell deeply in love with you somewhere over Topeka, Kansas…”

I fell deeply in love with you somewhere over Topeka, Kansas
On a cross-country flight shaky & timid, tossed around by
Pockets of air brazen & angry at us for taking up space
Falling asleep awake in the bland pattern-woven chairs with
Pressed down foam & padding from lazy businessmen leaning
Me dreaming of you when my eyes were shut
Believing in you when they were open because
I remember the way at dinner last night your tongue
Lifted an ice cube up the side of the glass, popping
It into your mouth & through lips I could see you
Clean your iced tea off the ice, tracing letters with your tongue
And the ice cube gave up dissolving into pools
At the edges of your mouth & slipping away down your throat
Following motion with gravity until nothing was left
Except a slight smile on your lips & I’m telling you
Four hours & twenty minutes is more than enough time to
Bring me closer to your body, in dreams made real with
Sweat & passion & bottom-of-the-glass certainties
As this rickety airplane makes unsure noises about
Its velocity, I simply come to conclusions I will carry
Until I touchdown, eyes shocked open as the runway
Rolls under me & Topeka, Kansas is just fading into the middle
A great, wide plain of stops & starts, convinced I’m sitting
Uncomfortably but illuminated
